Bigi Kaaiman: Songs & Tales from Slavery Times

How does history continue to resonate in Suriname’s living musical heritage – and what can children’s songs tell us about the history of slavery?
One of Suriname’s best-loved children’s songs is Bigi Kaaiman. But does everyone know that behind the story of the big caiman lies a tale connected to the Maroons’ struggle for freedom? At the initiative of Museum Geelvinck, actress and singer Gerda LentenHavertong and flautist Ronald Snijders set out to explore songs like these, resulting in the documentary Bigi Kaaiman.
Bigi Kaaiman
In Bigi Kaaiman, we ask to what extent Suriname’s living musical heritage, preserved in children’s songs that still carry echoes of the history of slavery, remains known today and is being passed on to future generations. The documentary was created by Museum Geelvinck in collaboration with Gerda LentenHavertong and Ronald Snijders, and produced by Museum Geelvinck together with video producer Michel Agterberg.
The documentary Bigi Kaaiman will be screened at the Bijlmer Parktheater on 17 October as part of Black Achievement Month. After the interval, Gerda LentenHavertong and Ronald Snijders, joined by pianist Mark Milan and percussionist Giovanni Essed, will perform a selection of songs featured in the documentary.
