Movie night 1 | La La Land

Fancy a cosy evening of films, relaxation and good company? Then come along to our Movie Nights in the Amphitheatre! During the 2026–2027 academic year, we’re organising no fewer than seven film nights especially for you.
Following the success of his musical drama Whiplash (2014), director Damien Chazelle took the plunge: La La Land is a classic musical in the style of those starring Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers.

Struggling jazz pianist Seb (Gosling) and aspiring actress Mia (Stone) fall in love and try to support each other in realising their personal ambitions and dreams (a jazz club of his own and serious acting roles, respectively). A delightful musical from Whiplash director Chazelle, in the style of the classics from the 1950s and 1960s. Gosling and Stone, who are not professional singers or dancers, tackle the many catchy song-and-dance numbers with verve and succeed in making Seb and Mia come across as real people. Six Oscars, including one for Stone and one for Chazelle.

The first Movie Night of this academic year. We’re screening: La La Land. When Sebastian, a pianist, and Mia, an actress, follow their passions and find success in their respective fields, they find themselves torn between their love for each other and their careers. A wonderful film that’s a must-see.
