20:45h MARION COUSIN & ELOÏSE DECAZES
Marion Cousin, a ‘collector’ and activist of traditional songs from the Iberian Peninsula, work, ploughing or gathering songs, medieval songs, epic love stories, various dramas, taken from Mallorca, Menorca, Extremadura and so on…
She is joined by musician Eloïse Decazes (Arlt) in an experimental and magnetic adventure for two voices, a face-to-face table, Mirandese songs of work, celebration or exasperation are here to be experienced and laughed at.
For about 15 years, each with their idiosyncratic expressions and temperaments, and through different incarnations and collaborations they’ve been sustaining a relentless and wild resolution to experiment with a distinctive alloy of traditional and experimental music practices. Those flavors will always function in simultaneity rather than opposition in their works.
For their first time as a duo, Marion Cousin and Eloïse Decazes perform the vernacular repertoire of the songs of Tras-O-Montes, north-east of Portugal. The resulting offering is an amorous, raw, heretical take on this material, a sprig of work and celebration chants, songs of exasperation uttered with their two voices, so far away and so close from each other in a plastic regional idiom, Mirandese – semi-phonetically and playfully appropriated here. Their voices scale up mutinously, wildly, sketching melodies and dancing boldly in and out of tune, in an euphorically deranged environment, a flood of ungainly noises: machines, lethargic drumboxes, nano-brutalist synths, unnerving guitar sketches, bursts of laughter. Abundantly vivid. Staggeringly wonderful.
