Shunske Sato & Shuann Chai

Violist Shunske Sato is regelmatig te gast in Leiden! Vorig seizoen nog speelde hij hier prachtig Brahms’ vioolconcert, samen met de Nieuwe Philharmonie onder leiding van Johannes Leertouwer. Nu is zijn partner de Amerikaanse pianiste Shuann Chai, ‘een echte oor-opener,’ vindt Fanfare Magazine. Het duo is te horen met muziek van rond de Eerste Wereldoorlog: Debussy, Ravel, Elgar en anderen.
Getorpedeerd
Niet al deze componisten kwamen die Grote Oorlog ongeschonden door. De Spanjaard Enrique Granados om kwam toen hij in 1916 het Kanaal overstak en werd getorpedeerd door een vijandelijke Duitse U-boot. Of de Belg Eugène Ysaÿe, wiens zoon aan het front moest dienen. Ook Claude Debussy kon zich moeilijk aan de oorlog onttrekken, raakte in een depressie maar richtte zich toch extra fier op wat hij noemde een nationale ‘Musique Française’. Zijn enige vioolsonate uit 1917, het laatste wat hij op papier zette, getuigt daarvan.
Woudmagie
Edward Elgar voelde zich bedrukt door de sombere oorlogsstemming, Hij verliet Londen en zocht zijn toevlucht in een cottage op het platteland, ver van het oorlogsgedruis. Het tweede deel van de vioolsonate die hij daar in 1918 schreef, zou volgens zijn vrouw zijn geïnspireerd door de ‘woudmagie’ van de bossen bij Fittleworth. Erich Wolfgang Korngold bewerkte, omdat de première vanwege de oorlog werd uitgesteld, zijn toneelmuziek bij Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing voor viool en piano. Doordrongen tenslotte van de Eerste Wereldoorlog is zeker Maurice Ravels Le tombeau de Couperin, waarin de componist zes bevriende oorlogsslachtoffers muzikaal eert. Of: herdenkt.
Reflectief
Shunske Sato speelt niet alleen, hij presenteert ook een aantal opnamen van de componisten die gespeeld worden. Dit soms introverte en reflectieve concert is een tegenhanger van Sato’s optreden ruim twee weken eerder, op 8 mei, waar hij Vivaldi’s uitbundige De vier jaargetijden speelt.

Torpedoed
Not all of these composers came through that Great War undamaged. The Spaniard Enrique Granados for example died when he crossed the English Channel in 1916 and was torpedoed by an enemy German U-boat. Or the Belgian Eugène Ysaÿe, whose son had to serve. Claude Debussy, too, had difficulty escaping the war, fell into a depression but still focused extra ardently on what he called a national ‘Musique Française’. His only violin sonata from 1917, the last thing he put on paper, attests to this.
Forest magic
Edward Elgar felt oppressed by the gloomy mood of war. He left London and took refuge in a cottage in the countryside, far from the turmoil of war. According to his wife, the second movement of the violin sonata he wrote there in 1918 was supposedly inspired by the ‘forest magic’ of the woods near Fittleworth. The premiere was postponed because of the war, Erich Wolfgang Korngold adapted his stage music to Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing for violin and piano. Affected by the First World War, certainly, is Maurice Ravel’s Le tombeau de Couperin, in which the composer musically honors six war casualties who were friends. Or: commemorates.
Reflective
Shunske Sato not only plays, he also presents a number of recordings of the composers being played. This sometimes introverted and reflective concert is a counterpart to Sato’s performance more than two weeks earlier, on May 8th, where he played Vivaldi’s exuberant The Four Seasons.
