Pijn als noodzakelijk kwaad
Dat pijn bij het leven hoort, is al eeuwenlang verankerd in zowel de westerse als oosterse cultuur, filosofie en religies. Pijn, hoe onprettig ook, zorgde voor persoonlijke ontwikkeling, reflectie en een stap richting verlichting, werd er gedacht. In de huidige westerse maatschappij wordt pijn echter gezien als iets onwenselijks. Pijn moet verdoofd worden, er moet voor afleiding gezorgd worden: pijn is iets om vooral zo snel mogelijk vanaf te raken. The Language of Pain is een muzikale theatrale voorstelling waarin de huidige westerse omgang met pijn bevraagd wordt. Doen we onszelf juist niet te kort door pijn te vermijden? Wat wil pijn ons vertellen? En wat zijn de sociale implicaties, als we geen pijn meer voelen?
Monteverdi
Tussen zijn vijfde en achtste boek van madrigalen (1603-1638) ontwikkelde de Italiaanse componist Claudio Monteverdi een muzikale taal om emoties weer te geven en over te brengen. Zijn madrigalen gingen vaak over pijn, voortgebracht door afstand, afwijzing, verlangen en onbeantwoorde liefde.
Met de muziek van Monteverdi als muzikale basis brengen het Zwitserse ensemble Theatro dei Cervelli en de Duitse theatergroep Goldstaub e.V. een immersieve theatrale ervaring over pijn en empathie, waarbij de grens tussen podium en publiek langzaam verdwijnt.

Jeffrey Döring en Andrés Locatelli
The Language of Pain is de derde voorstelling van dramaturg Jeffrey Döring, en de eerste samenwerking van Theatro dei Cervelli en company Goldstaub e.V. Voor eerder werk ontving Döring onder andere de Marie-Zimmermann Fellowship 2017 en de Denkzeit Fellowship 2020.
De Italiaans-Argentijnse musicus en musicoloog Andrés Locatelli richtte het vocaal-instrumentale ensemble Theatro dei Cervelli op in 2018. Het ensemble richt zich op het herontdekken van vergeten repertoire uit de 17e eeuw.

Pain as necessary evil
For centuries, the notion that pain is part of life has been embedded in both Western and Eastern culture, philosophy and religions. Pain, however unpleasant, provided personal development, reflection and a step towards enlightenment, it was thought. In today’s Western society, however, pain is seen as something undesirable. Pain must be numbed, distractions must be provided: pain is something to get rid of as soon as possible. The Language of Pain is a musical theatrical performance that questions the current Western way of dealing with pain. Don’t we sell ourselves short by avoiding pain? What does pain want to tell us? And what are the social implications, if we no longer feel pain?
Monteverdi
Between his fifth and eighth book of madrigals (1603-1638), Italian composer Claudio Monteverdi developed a musical language to express and convey emotions. His madrigals were often about pain, brought on by distance, rejection, longing and unrequited love.
Using Monteverdi’s music as a musical basis, the Swiss ensemble Theatro dei Cervelli and the German theatre group Goldstaub e.V. present an immersive theatrical experience about pain and empathy, where the boundary between stage and audience slowly disappears.

Jeffrey Döring and Andrés Locatelli
The Language of Pain is the third performance by dramatist Jeffrey Döring, and the first collaboration between Theatro dei Cervelli and company Goldstaub e.V. For previous work, Döring received the Marie-Zimmermann Fellowship 2017 and the Denkzeit Fellowship 2020, among others.
Italian-Argentinian musician and musicologist Andrés Locatelli founded the vocal-instrumental ensemble Theatro dei Cervelli in 2018. The ensemble focuses on rediscovering forgotten repertoire from the 17th century.
