Great Apes of the West Coast

In een poging om een liefdesbrief aan haar volk te schrijven en haar West-Afrikaanse roots te herontdekken, wordt Great Apes of the West Coast een visuele, muzikale en lyrische solovoorstelling die het verhaal van de West-Afrikaanse cultuur vertelt door de stem van een West-Afrikaanse vrouw. 

Princess Isatu Hassan Bangura is genomineerd voor de Theo d’Or / Grensverleggend en de BNG Bank Theater prijs 2024.
Het is een verhaal van herbeginnen, herontdekken en herinneren. Een verhaal dat het geluid, de stemmen en de taal van een West-Afrikaanse stam naar westerse theaters brengt. Voor het eerst zal Princess Isatu Hassan Bangura een eigen reis door het verleden maken om een nieuwe identiteit te creëren en haar persoonlijk verhaal vanuit een nieuw perspectief te vertellen. Bangura gebruikt theater hiervoor als een instrument om het licht van de West-Afrikaanse cultuur te doen herleven. Ze wil het narratief rond de ‘Great Apes’ heroveren en elke negatieve connotatie met het dierenrijk uit de wereld helpen. Een rauwe en krachtige afrofuturistische solovoorstelling.

As an attempt to compose a love letter to her people and to re-discover her West-African roots, Great Apes of the West Coast will be a visual, musical and lyrical solo performance that tells the story of the West-African culture through the voice of a West-African woman. 
 
It is the tale of new beginnings, re-discoveries, and past memories. A tale about bringing the sound, the voices, and the language of a West African tribe to western theatres. For the first time, Princess Isatu Hassan Bangura will take a trip down memory lane to craft a new identity and retell her personal story from a new perspective. Using theatre as a tool to resurrect and celebrate the light of the West-African culture, Bangura wants to reclaim the narrative of the Great Apes and overturn any negative connotation with the animal Queendom. A raw and powerful afrofuturistic solo performance.
