Tactical Video (T.V.) is a hybrid event and publication series by THE VOID.
Inspired by the production and distribution methods of community-access television, with THE VOID T.V. we are exploring the possibilities of online video streaming to create regular hybrid events. Rather than depicting events, with this series of broadcasts THE VOID will manufacture events. Bringing back the ambitions of tactical media, during these broadcasts video becomes a space for gathering, making alliances, conspiring, and creating networks of solidarity. This hybrid space is open for monthly collaborations with activists, researchers, and artists interested in exploring the tactical possibilities of video.
Against the backdrop of the recent launch of the StreamArtNetwork, for this fourth Tactical Video broadcast we will discuss the potentials and limitations of practicing streaming as an occasion to create digital infrastructures of solidarity. The urgency to make and maintain localized yet distributed, open yet trusted, community-led yet flexible, and accessible yet ecologically and socially sustainable alternative infrastructures for online gathering has only grown from the now seemingly distant pandemic times. Video streaming, our medium of choice, is only behind AI when it comes to energy and computationally intensive technologies. This begs the question: can streaming become a sustainable practice putting care for the environment, for hardware (from cables and cameras to servers), and each other before acritical mass outreach and constant content production? How can streaming become a practice of solidarity that acknowledges its material, infrastructural conditions and limitations?
Join us at the Ventilator Cinema in OT301 for an evening of sincere conversations on how to stream otherwise bringing together the self-hosting and alternative design initiatives SysterServer, Permacomputing, and Hackers & Designers. Featuring presentations and chats with Ola Bonati, Aymeric Mansoux, and ezn, the event will be moderated by Erica Gargaglione and the T.V. Team. The night will be completed with a therminoise performance by Martina Raponi.
